G'day people,
what tyres would you recommend me changing to? Don't really care for mileage, would rather a better tyre for performance over distance.

cheers

Haven't tried them myself, but I hear the Night dragons take a while to heat up and lack grip until they are warm.
Cobra's are definitely better than the Pirelli
Many, myself included, are running Michellin Commander II's and are very happy with them. I'll be getter my third set, when these are done.

I've had two Night Dragons, wear was ok, 10 - 11 k (kms) , no problems with getting up to temp here in Qld, handle well and stick well. Only stuck with Commanders since due to better wear, but not that much better, maybe 2k. Never had Cobra's on the rear, only front and they are excellent.

When do we get to see that custom exhaust

I ran a night dragon on the front and it lasted a warpin 4000 miles ,plus I saw no difference in handling. So now I wouldn't run one of em on my wheel barrow!!

Yes they are the worse front tyre that I've had on any bike, but good on the rear.

When comparing the Avon AV71 / AV72 to the Michellin Commander II which of the 2 have better wear and grip charateristics? Also, how would you compare either of these to the stock Metzeler's?

I've never run an Avon on the rear, so can't comment there.

The Commander will outwear the Metz (nearly every tyre will) , never had an issue with either in handling or sticking, because the Commander is a 55 profile I think it rides a bit better.

After 7400 miles, I think my original Metz on the rear has at least another 1k left to go - after that I plan to get a set of Bridgestone Exedra Max to try.

I tried a set of the Exedra's on my scooter, and even though they handled well, they didn't last worth a shit.So no more Exedra's for me.

Does changing a tire aspect ratio have an impact with the ABS ? I was wondering if the ABS compares speed with front vs. rear or is it just looking for an instant change within an individual wheel. I would presume that a small change from 50 to 55 isn't a big deal, but I am just wondering.

I doubt it.If one tire locks up a head of the other, front or rear, all the ABS does is release that brake so ya don't go into a skid and keeps ya goin in a straight line or at a controlled stop.I've been runnin a 55 series rear tire almost since the beginning [July 2010 and 92,000 miles ago] and it hasn't affected my ABS yet!!

Dave, based on an earlier statement you made on this thread, I presume that you are running Avon's, is that correct? Have you tried the Michelin Commander II's? Since you are the high mileage runner around here, i'm sure you have a good idea which tire has the best wear characteristic for our bikes.

I've gone thru a shit load of tires over the last 5 1/2 years I've owned my Bird, experimenting with all the different brands available over the 92,000 miles I've traveled, and IMO,the Avon Cobra's,AV71 and AV72,respectively, are the best bang for the buck in both mileage and performance! The second option for a rear tire was Dunlop's American Elite. The problem with the AE is,it sings when goin down the road, not bad,but it does make noise. And all the rear tires I've used have a 55 aspect ratio verses the factory 50 aspect ratio. And the reason I like the 55 series is because it sets alittle higher and has a higher side wall rating. In other words,it can carry more weight. The pressures I've arrived at over those miles are 36psi front and 35psi rear, unless I'm carrying a passenger which I increase only the rear tire pressure by 2 or 3 lbs.,or if you're wanna play squirrel. But those pressures are working for me and that's what counts.!! But again, that's just my opinion,FWIW, and I'm not too bright!! Dave!!!

ok so tire time for me both front and rear, have some questions. Seems the choice for the 50's is less than the 55 series around here, i can only now just flat foot (not 100%) my bike with the 50, how much difference will the 55 be? will the bike still look level? i am still a little mixed up where the tire ratings are concerned, what should i be getting R versus R>>> or others? I am 200 lbs and sometimes ride with a passenger and gear , add another 200 lbs or so. thanks.

i was thinking about these.

Bridgestone Exedra Max Radial Rear Tire 200/50zr-17

Bridgestone Exedra Max Radial Front Tire 120/70zr-19

285.00 for both tires free shipping. thought pretty good price but i don't know anything about them, ratings are good though.

I have no experience with the Exedra but one is going on the rear in a couple of weeks time. It seems to have more meat in the centre of the tyre than the Mez. It only needs to be as good as the Mez though, which at 11,200 miles is beginning to show some undertread in the centre.

they also have this one for about 20 bucks more but not sure how to choose . I think these ones are more performance style but may also be softer not sure.

I have Bridgestone Exendra Max on my Rocket...different bike granted, but I like the tyre for grip, looks and so far I have 5000kms on it and there is heaps left on it. Our roads here are usually rough tarseal. I run the rear tyre at 42psi with just me on the bike...I know Dave likes to run less pressure for better wear so maybe that's better??...I have only had Metzler and the Bridgestone so cant comment on the others.

thanks Terry, been doing some reading and spoke with locals most seem to like the Bridgestone tires, seem good in wet and decent performance. I know some R3 guys local in my club that swear by them so think i am going to give them a go and see. I got about 10,000 klm on the metzlers, mot of that when i first got the bike and was having fun with the throttle. We have allot of flat here not much for corners so hard on the center of tires.
